Overview

Dr. Tolosa earned his medical degree and completed residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in his native Bogotá, Colombia. He then completed a fellowship in Perinatal Medicine and Ultrasound at Hammersmith Hospital, Royal Postgraduate Medical School, University of London in the UK. His interest in biomedical research took him to the University of Pennsylvania, in the U.S., where he earned a Master’s Degree in Clinical Epidemiology, followed by completion of residency requirements in Obstetrics & Gynecology and a Fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Pennsylvania Hospital, University of Pennsylvania, in Philadelphia. He was a Senior Staff Fellow at the Perinatology Research Branch of the National Institutes of Child Health & Human Development of the National Institutes of Health in Washington DC. He was in the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division faculty at Thomas Jefferson University for 10 years and moved to Portland, Oregon, in 2004, where he is a Professor in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Oregon Health & Science University. He recently joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at St. Luke’s University Health Network as Director of Research in the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine. He served as Chair of the Steering Committee of the Global Network for Women’s and Childrens’ Health Research of the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NIH-NICHD) of the United States. (2019-2022). He is a member of the Standing Committee on Medical and Epidemiological Aspects of Air Pollution on U.S. Government Employees and their families of the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine of the United States. In 2022, he was named to be a member of the Assembly of PROFAMILIA, the largest organization providing reproductive health and Family Planning services in Colombia. He founded and co-directs FUNDARED-MATERNA in Colombia, a Foundation dedicated to capacity building and development of implementation research in Obstetrics, Gynecology and in Reproductive Health.
