Meet this year's Travel Grant winners

To support education and research in under-served regions of the world, ISUOG offers Travel Grants at each of its World Congresses. Travel Grant applicants are abstract submitters working in under-served regions of the world, and successful recipients are selected by the Scientific Committee. ISUOG is delighted to have awarded Travel Grants to the following Travel Grantees in 2022.

Abstract title: Fetal sacrococcygeal teratoma with severe hemorrhage and maternal mirror syndrome

Abdallah Mahdi is an obstetrician & gynaecologist working in Al-Shifa Hospital, the referral maternity hospital in the Gaza Strip. He was awarded the Saïd Foundation scholarship to complete his masters in Prenatal Genetics & Fetal Medicine from the University College London (UCL). During his masters he achieved high research results that qualified him to present his work in international conferences and publish in top-ranking scientific journals.

During his studies and career, Abdallah has focused on learning the development of fetuses and factors that play a role in determining birthweight. Through understanding the role of genes and environment on fetus growth, he was able to describe some abnormalities that may arise in different parts of the fetus body. Linking this to his previous studies, Abdallah provides genetic counselling to parents about their babies with a commitment to evidence-based medicine.

Abstract title: Ultrasound OBGYN Teaching in 67 Clinics & Hospitals in Haiti: 2019-2021

 
Alicia was born in Cuba and became a physician in Venezuela from where she emigrated to the USA as a political refugee. She studied OBGYN sonography at the Université Paris V in Paris, France. Ultrasound was introduced to her on her GYN residency. “It was instant love for the technology, I was able to see inside the human body! Everyday I’m still amazed of how the technology has evolved” she states.
 
Since emigrating to the USA, she has been teaching and working as a sonographer. What gives her the most is to teach physicians and medical personnel from middle and low income countries. Alicia has taught ultrasound technology all around the world: in 2008 in Tanzania, 2014 in Bali, 2015 in the Philippines, 2016 & 2017 in Guatemala, Nepal 2017 and Haiti from 2019 to 2022.

Abstract title: Correlation of umbilical artery Doppler indices with perinatal outcome in women with preeclampsia in rural Nigeria

Dr. Anthonia Inibokun Njoku is an Obstetrician/Gynecologist with special interest in fetomaternal medicine, sexual/reproductive health - seeking to make the lives of women and unborn children worthwhile with safer pregnancy outcomes. She is a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons, a best in O&G prize winner in her cohort and a Fellow of the International College of Surgeons.
 
Anthonia is currently engaged in clinical, academic and administrative works as: a Hospital Consultant in Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Irrua, a Senior Lecturer in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma and Head of Department in both institutions in Edo State, Nigeria. She serves as a facilitator and Trainer for ISUOG, approved Fetal Medicine and Ultrasound workshops and outreach programs in Nigeria and Life Saving Skill trainings in Sierra Leone on Maternal and New-born Health, where she served as the course director. She is a strong advocate of women’s reproductive health issues and rights.

Abstract title: A rare case of a complete tubal abortion

 
Eglantina Dema is an Obstetrician-Gynecologist in Albania. For 8 years, she worked part-time in at the Kruja Hospital Emergency Department (24h services) as a general doctor. This was in her free time, once or twice a week. For about 4 years she was a medical consultant at a factory, helping workers who fell ill. From 2012 to 2015, she worked as a doctor in the Child Consultation Clinic at the Kruja Health Center. She is currently completing a clinical observership in Reproductive Medicine in University Hospital of Vienna. Eglantina is also the author of many abstracts which have been published and/or presented in international conferences and congresses.

January 2020 - present: Obstetrician and Gynecologist at the Xhafer Kongoli Regional Hospital , Elbasan.
December 2020 - present: Part-time Obstetrician and Gynecologist at the American Hospital, Tirana, Albania.
December 2019 - Present: Part-time Consultant Obstetrician and Gynecologist at the German Hospital, Tirana, Albania. 
August - December 2020: Part-time Obstetrician and Gynecologist (with a focus on fertility and transvaginal ultrasound) at the Sante Plus Hospital, Tirana, Albania.
January - March 2020: fellowship at Imperial College London in Onco-Gynecology

Abstract title: Prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart diseases following 170 fetal echocardiographies at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Nigeria

Dr. Ibraheem Awowole is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria, as well as a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, England.  He completed his Fetal Medicine sub-specialty training at the University of Leeds NHS Trusts, England in 2018.
 
He is currently a Senior Lecturer at the Perinatology Unit of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ife. His passion is to contribute to capacity building in OBGYN ultrasound through training, thereby improving the access of pregnant women in Nigeria to well-deserved, specialized care. He is a member of the Feto-Maternal Subspecialty Curriculum Development Committee of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He is also a Facilitator to the Faculty of Radiology of the West African College of Surgeons on Feto-Maternal Medicine, as well as many other training programmes on Obstetric Ultrasound and Fetal Medicine in Nigeria.
