Learning objectives

Identify the key ultrasound features of superficial endometriosis and apply practical scanning techniques to improve detection in routine clinical practice.
Evaluate the extent and characteristics of bowel endometriosis on preoperative imaging, and communicate findings essential for surgical planning and multidisciplinary management.
Differentiate atypical endometriomas from other adnexal masses, and assess when conservative management and surveillance may be appropriate.
Recognise the sonographic appearance of endometriosis in uncommon anatomical locations and incorporate these findings into comprehensive patient assessment and diagnosis.

A/Prof. Ligita Jokubkiene (Sweden) Courses Sub-Committee Chair

Ligita Jokubkiene is an associate professor at Lund university, Sweden and senior consultant in obstetrics and gynecology at the Department of Obstetrics and gynecology, at Skane University Hospital Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Malmö, Swede. She has defended her thesis with the title ”Three-dimensional ultrasound studies of normal and abnormal ovaries” in 2012. Currently she is an active researcher leading several research projects with focus on ultrasound diagnostics in gynecology, particularly on endometriosis, pelvic floor birth-related injuries and pelvic pain. She is also participating in international multicenter studies lead by IOTAnstudying ovarian masses. Ligita Jokubkiene is supervising master and PhD students.

Ligita Jokubkiene organizes and leads national and international courses on ultrasound diagnostics from basic to advanced level. She has been an invited speaker at many international courses and congresses. Ligita Jokubkiene is a chair of Educational courses subcommittee at ISUOG (International Society of ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology). She is also a chair of the Ultrasound reference group at Swedish Society of Obstetrics and gynecology in Sweden.

A/Prof. Mathew Leonardi (Canada) NGen Committee member

Advanced gynecologic surgeon and sonologist in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Hamilton Health Sciences

Dr Mathew Leonardi is an expert in complex gynecology, endometriosis excision surgery and gynaecological ultrasound (associate professor) at McMaster University Medical Centre in Hamilton, Canada. He is an honorary adjunct lecturer at the University of Adelaide. His philosophy of care includes working in an interdisciplinary team and patient-centred decision making. He has been awarded his PhD from the University of Sydney which is focused on the utility of ultrasound in the diagnosis and surgical management of endometriosis.

Dr Leonardi is a nationally and internationally recognized leader in his field. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed scientific articles, several textbook chapters, and presented at numerous international congresses on endometriosis. He has received numerous awards for his conference presentations on endometriosis. He is an avid researcher, actively contributing academically to the advancement of gynecologic health.

Dr Leonardi is on the World Endometriosis Society Early Career Board and a founding member of the Next Generation Committee at the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is an Associate Editor for Reproduction & Fertility and on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology, Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of Canada. He is part of an international research group named Imagendo, which won the most prestigious science award in Australia, the 2023 ANSTO Eureka Prize for Innovative Use of Technology.

Prof. George Condous (Australia) ISUOG Trustee

Consultant Gynaecologist at Nepean Hospital and Director of OMNI Gynaecological Care, Centre for Women’s Ultrasound.

He is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Sydney Medical School, Nepean, University of Sydney and specialist in Gynaecological Ultrasound and Advanced Endosurgery. He set up the first and only Acute Gynaecology Unit in Australia which utilises ultrasound at the first point of contact for women with emergency gynaecological as well as early pregnancy complications (miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy). He is also responsible for the One-Stop Ultrasound based diagnostic clinics; which review women with abnormal uterine bleeding, chronic pelvic pain (endometriosis), adnexal pathology (ovarian cysts) as well as post-menopausal bleeding. He performs Advanced Endosurgery procedures for women who need intervention for pelvic masses, adnexal pathology, severe endometriosis or hysterectomy. He also runs ‘Hands on’ Live Sheep Laparoscopic Workshops for gynaecologists at Camden Veterinarian School.
