Learn more about the role of evaluating the cervix in predicting pre-term birth (PTB) with this month’s free resources.

Every month ISUOG makes available a free chapter from its online encyclopedia, VISUOG. This month’s open chapter is on the cervix. The topic has been selected ahead of World Prematurity Day on 17 November 2025.

Why is this chapter particularly relevant to prematurity?

PTB is a prevalent obstetrical complication and the leading cause of neonatal mortality and morbidity, including long-term disabilities such as neurodevelopment delay. Ultrasonographic evaluation of the cervix in asymptomatic and symptomatic women with targeted interventions is an effective strategy for predicting PTB and preventing the burden of the disease.

What does the open chapter cover this month?

Within the chapter you can find out more information the definition of PTB, risk factors, ultrasonographic evaluation of the cervix, primary and secondary prevention and treatment.

We will be sharing more relevant resources and information on 17 November so keep an eye out on the ISUOG website and social media platforms.
