Scimitar Syndrome
Scimitar syndrome is a rare congenital pulmonary anomaly. It is characterized by a unilateral anomalous pulmonary venous drainage consisting of an aberrant vein that drains the lung blood flow into the systemic venous circulation (usually the inferior vena cava), and is associated with ipsilateral pulmonary hypoplasia, underdevelopment of the ipsilateral pulmonary artery, and sometimes an anomalous systemic arterial supply from the descending aorta to the hypoplastic lung.
Diaphragmatic Hernia
Congenital diaphragmatic hernia is a fetal defect associated with a higher risk of mortality due to pulmonary hypertension and lung hypoplasia. Fetal diagnosis is based on demonstration of an abnormality in the thoracic view. Prognosis is based on evaluation of the lung size in the contralateral side of the hernia.
Pulmonary Agenesis and Aplasia
Pulmonary agenesis and pulmonary aplasia are both rare pulmonary developmental abnormalities. Pulmonary agenesis refers to the complete absence of lung parenchyma, bronchi and vessels whereas in pulmonary aplasia, there is presence of rudimentary bronchi with no associated lung parenchyma.
