St George's is pleased to be hosting the first training course featuring hands on ultrasound scanning of fetal presentation at term, in particular focusing on the use of hand-held ultrasound devices. The course features both lectures and hands on scanning facilitated by our expert trainers and generous patients alongside consultant led lectures and teaching sessions. Topics covered on the day: Basic physics of imaging in ultrasound How to optimise your image (Orientation, probe handling and machine settings in practice) Fetal presentation Evidence on the value of ultrasound assessment of the fetal presentation at term Hands-on practice.

Prof. Asma Khalil is a Professor of Fetal Medicine. She is the Obstetric Lead at the National Maternity and Perinatal Audit (NMPA). She gained her MD at the University of London in 2008.  

Prof. Asma Khalil has published more than 500 peer-reviewed papers, and many published review articles and chapters. She was awarded many research prizes, both at national and international meetings. She was awarded the 2021 FIGO Women's Awards: Recognising Female Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Her research interests include twin pregnancy, congenital infections, fetal growth restriction and hypertensive disorders in pregnancy. 

She had a fellowship with the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE).  committed to the implementation of clinical guidelines in practice. She is the Lead author of the ISUOG guideline on the role of ultrasound in twins and congenital infections. She also led the guideline team developing the FIGO guideline on twin pregnancies. She was a member of the NICE Guideline Committee updating the Twin and Multiple Pregnancy guidance.

Professor in Fetal Medicine at St George’s Hospital, University of London, Director of Fetal Medicine at St George’s Hospital, former Editor-in-Chief UOG 2011-2018

Prof. Basky Thilaganathan is a specialist in the medical and surgical management of highrisk pregnancies (materno-fetal medicine) with a focus on twin pregnancy, fetal growth, fetal abnormality and pre-eclampsia. Prof. Thilaganathan's research methods include uterine Doppler and trophoblast invasion, screening for pre-eclampsia, echocardiography-based studies of maternal cardiac adaptation to pregnancy, and clinical studies of twin pregnancies.

He has authored two undergraduate and five postgraduate textbooks in obstetrics and fetal medicine and is the lead trainer for the Maternal-Fetal medicine sub-speciality training programme at St George’s Hospital, London. Prof. Thilaganathan was Editor-in-Chief of ISUOG’s Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology for nearly 8 years, within that time raising the Journal’s impact factor to 5.654. Furthermore, he has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications in indexed journals. He is a Council Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), member of the National screening Committee and also the Clinical Lead
for the first dedicated high-throughput NIPT lab in the UK NHS to undertake cfDNA aneuploidy screening in pregnancy.
