This course is the second part of an exploration of ovarian cancer, providing a comprehensive understanding of ultrasound in the assessment of adnexal masses. Learn to recognise the sonographic features of malignant ovarian tumours, apply pattern recognition and risk assessment models, evaluate disease spread, and explore the role of ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy in the diagnosis and management of gynecological cancers.
Overview
Course name: ATC10 Ovarian cancer 2: Tumors, staging, and biopsy
Duration of course: 7 hours (+ supplementary materials)
Length of access for each course: 12 months
Certificates: 7 CME credits and ISUOG Certificate of Completion
Access: Online learning, learn at your own pace.

Why do this course?
This course will equip you with the practical skills to confidently use ultrasound in the diagnosis, characterization and staging of ovarian cancer. Build on your understanding of adnexal masses by learning to recognise the sonographic features of malignant ovarian tumours, assess disease spread, predict surgical resectability, and explore the role of ultrasound-guided procedures to support clinical decision-making and improve patient care.
Course description
This course is the second part of an exploration of Ovarian cancer and will provide learners with a comprehensive understanding of the ultrasound evaluation of adnexal masses using pattern recognition approaches, including the identification of malignant sonographic features and the application of standardized terminology and risk assessment models. Emphasis is placed on the major role of ultrasound in characterizing and defining adnexal mass pathology, with detailed exploration of the distinct ultrasound patterns associated with the four principal malignant ovarian tumor groups: epithelial, germ-cell, sex cord–stromal and metastatic ovarian cancers.
This course will also investigate ovarian cancer spread, including evaluation of pelvic and abdominal disease extension, and the clinical applications of ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy in gynecological oncology.

Learning objectives
- Identify various types of ovarian tumors on ultrasound through pattern recognition.
- Understand the role of ultrasound in comparison with other imaging modalities for ovarian cancer staging.
- Demonstrate competence in using ultrasound for ovarian cancer staging, including the assessment of peritoneal surfaces, lymph nodes, and abdominal viscera in cases of advanced disease.
- Recognize the indications for ultrasound-guided biopsy and understand the procedural approach.
Key questions
- What are the typical ultrasound features of each histological subtype of ovarian malignancy?
- How does ultrasound compare with other imaging modalities in the diagnosis and staging of ovarian cancer?
- How can ultrasound be used to assess peritoneal involvement and lymph node metastasis in patients with ovarian cancer?
- Why is ultrasound the preferred imaging modality for guiding biopsies in ovarian cancer, and what are the indications for its use?
