Why do this course?

Enhance your expertise in the diagnosis and management of ectopic pregnancy through an evidence-based, clinically focused approach. This course will strengthen your understanding of ectopic pregnancy classification, pathophysiology and anatomical diagnosis, while developing confidence in identifying both tubal and non-tubal ectopic pregnancies using transvaginal ultrasound. You will also gain practical insight into risk stratification and the role of ultrasound in guiding expectant, medical and surgical management decisions.

Course description

This course provides an evidence-based focused review of ectopic pregnancy, grounded in the standards and literature of Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynecology. Participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of the definition, classification and pathophysiology of ectopic pregnancy, with emphasis on precise anatomical diagnosis. Through a structured approach to transvaginal ultrasound, learners will examine the sonographic features of tubal and non-tubal ectopic pregnancies, including interstitial, cesarean scar and cervical implantation. The course further explores the pivotal role of ultrasound in risk stratification of ectopic pregnancy, and in guiding expectant, medical and surgical management.

Learning objectives

  • Define ectopic pregnancy and understand it’s contribution to first-trimester maternal morbidity and mortality.
  • Classify ectopic pregnancy according to anatomical location recognizing the clinical significance of accurate terminology.
  • Describe the systematic transvaginal ultrasound approach to early pregnancy assessment, including evaluation of uterine cavity, adnexa, pouch of Douglas and use of Doppler imaging.
  • Identify the specific ultrasound characteristics of non-tubal ectopic pregnancies, emphasizing early diagnostic criteria associated with improved outcomes.
  • Evaluate the role of ultrasound in guiding management decisions and in planning fertility-preserving strategies in non-tubal ectopic pregnancy.
  • Understand the role of ultrasound in follow-up and outcome assessment, including monitoring resolution after medical management.

Key questions

  • What constitutes an ectopic pregnancy, and how does precise anatomical classification influence prognosis and clinical management?
  • How can transvaginal ultrasound be performed systematically to reliably identify or exclude an ectopic pregnancy in early gestation?
  • What sonographic features distinguish tubal ectopic pregnancy from non-tubal forms such as interstitial, cesarean scar and cervical pregnancy?
  • How does ultrasound guide the selection and monitoring of expectant, medical and surgical management strategies in ectopic pregnancy?
