Ultrasound guidance has become central to modern gynecologic intervention, enabling precise, safe, and fertility-conserving procedures across benign, reproductive, and oncologic contexts. This Advanced Training course explores how ultrasound imaging improves the accuracy of intrauterine procedures, fluid-enhanced cavity assessment, minimally invasive biopsy, and targeted drainage techniques.

Why do this course?

This course is ideal for gynecologic practitioners seeking to enhance diagnostic precision and procedural safety through ultrasound-guided invasive techniques. It offers a theoretical foundation in modern ultrasound-guided procedures, from endometrial sampling and IUD placement to safe uterine evacuation, cavity assessment, and ultrasound-guided biopsy in gynecologic oncology. The course also highlights therapeutic applications such as drainage of pelvic collections and fertility-preserving interventions, emphasizing ultrasound’s expanding role in safe, effective, patient-centered care.

Course description

Ultrasound-guided invasive procedures have become central to contemporary gynecologic practice, offering substantial gains in diagnostic precision, procedural safety, and organ preservation. From enhancing the accuracy of endometrial sampling and intrauterine device placement to supporting safe uterine evacuation and fluid-based cavity assessment, ultrasound enables accurate visualization of intracavitary and adnexal anatomy. Its role extends further to gynecologic oncology, where ultrasound-guided biopsy provides high diagnostic yield with minimal complications, and to therapeutic interventions such as drainage of pelvic collections and cysts. Moreover, ultrasound guidance enables an expanding range of fertility-preserving procedures by facilitating targeted, tissue-conserving surgical approaches. Collectively, these applications underscore ultrasound’s evolving importance as both a diagnostic and interventional platform, integral to delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred gynecologic care.

This course provides a theoretical overview of ultrasound guided invasive procedures in gynecology and is intended to complement supervised, hands-on procedural training and should not be regarded as a substitute for formal clinical instruction or credentialed practice.

Learning objectives

  • Understand the role of ultrasound guidance in enhancing safety and accuracy across intrauterine gynecologic procedures.
  • Recognize the value of ultrasound guidance in IUCD insertion and the prevention of associated complications.
  • Explain how ultrasound supports safe and complete uterine evacuation procedures.
  • Understand the principles and clinical value of fluid instillation to enhance uterine and tubal imaging.
  • Outline the indications and methodology for ultrasound-guided biopsy in gynecologic oncology.
  • Compare transvaginal, transrectal, and percutaneous approaches for ultrasound-guided tumor sampling.
  • Describe the applications of ultrasound-guided drainage for benign and infectious gynecologic conditions.
  • Evaluate the benefits and limitations of ultrasound-guided drainage for benign and infectious gynecologic conditions.
  • Integrate ultrasound-based strategies into fertility-preserving surgical planning and decision-making.

Key questions

  • In what ways does ultrasound guidance improve lesion targeting and tissue adequacy during endometrial sampling, particularly in patients with distorted uterine anatomy or prior surgery?
  • How does ultrasound visualization during IUCD insertion reduce the risks of malposition, perforation, and subsequent contraceptive failure?
  • What are the benefits of ultrasound guidance in ensuring complete evacuation of intrauterine contents while minimizing trauma and procedural complications?
  • How does fluid instillation into the uterine cavity and/or fallopian tubes improve structural delineation and diagnostic accuracy?
  • When is ultrasound-guided biopsy preferred over surgical or radiologic alternatives in the diagnostic workup of suspected gynecologic malignancy?
  • What gynecologic pathologies are most effectively managed through ultrasound-guided drainage, and how does this approach influence clinical outcomes?
  • How does ultrasound facilitate precise, tissue-sparing approaches in fertility-preserving gynecologic surgery?
